Warning: Messy Play!!
Oobleck is a wonderful sensory activity….although it will get messy. This is best done outside, with clothes on that you don’t mind getting a little messy.
Oobleck is made out of cornflour and water, and isn’t a solid or a liquid! It’s a type of fluid called Non-Newtonian. It can appear like a liquid, but when pressure is applied to it, it feels like a solid. When you pick some up, you can squeeze it into a ball (the cornflour particles come together), but if you open your hand up, the ball will relax, and drip out of your hand (the cornstarch particles move away from each other).
You need 1 cup of water (add a few drops of food coloring if you like), and 1 1/2 cups of cornflour. Mix by hand or with a spoon until the texture feels similar to honey, but tears when you drag your finger across the top. If you mix it in a large tub or mixing bowl, it will be easier to play with.
How does it feel? Can you hold it in your hand? Is it hard? Or soft? Slimy?
